Ducks get there.
The Tests Don’t Matter
In school they bombarded you with a bunch of tests.
Made sure you did well on them.
Complete.Waste.Of.Time.
Tests don’t mean shit. There is nobody keeping score in the real world, except you.
The only ability you need after middle school is the ability to learn. Quickly.
Things are changing too fast for you to remember them.
We have computers and Google for that.
So apart from the annoying, yet efficient, internet post habit of putting big spaces between every line as if this gives more credibility to the statements, this post addressed to parents of kids born after 1982, has created a rush of comments. Both positive and negative. One thing which is true is the need for an acquired ability to learn. Quickly or not for that matter. Speed is relative to the amount of time wasted in the day weighed against the impression of the world spinning around faster than before giving less time to consume all of the fabulous products pushed onto us. But the ability to adapt is primordial. To adapt quickly while your at it, is handy too.
Andrea Allison seems like a nice woman and according to her blog in the AW blogroll (which I'm participating in) she is born in 1984 which means Chatreuse' blog is directed at her. The eighties babies. The ones who are born with technology, absorbing all before them and teaching us out of our crusty old-school ways of learning into a new world where everything is shiny and sponsored.
The fact is everyone feels like they are behind the times. There is always the impression that someone knows more, can do more, and better than you. There is someone, somewhere who has the newest piece of technology (and knows what to do with it) before you. This is the spectacular rise of need creation. When some bright spark realized that putting your clothes into a mechanical box with water and detergent might be faster than rubbing them against a rock we had the washing machine, but when someone shoved a camera into a mobile phone the eighties babies found uses for it, because let's face how often did you walk down the street with your camera slung around your neck. There is always someone who is gliding over the surface of the pond gracefully whilst you are paddling like a duck. Sure on the surface you look calm enough but your your little ducky feet are churning like crazy. It's okay to be duck. Ducks get there. They get things done and manage to maintain the appearance of not becoming too flustered.
So if you are paddling with the slickly sponsored, eighties-baby swans and keeping you head above water, don't sweat it. Everything will be alright.

My daughter was born in 1984 and her ducky feet are always running from one place to another. Speaking of duck feet, have you ever taken the duck tours that they have in Boston? The ride starts out as a mobile driving through the streets and then go right into the water of the Charles River for a continued ride. It's very ducky!

Do I qualify? I wasn't born in a year a cool book was named after, but I was born in 1980 so yeah, eighties baby here!
Even when I run into people who are more "behind the times" than I am, I don't really feel better about all I don't know. But I am ok with being a little behind because nothing's moving so fast that I can't catch up with...yet.

I was told this when I was a child. That compared to my parents' generation everything was on fast-forward. Now I hear my sister telling her teenage daughters. Plus ca change....

I'm old... So incredibly decidedly old...
I'd already written my first program by the time 1984 rolled around...
*sigh* *looks in mirror* *plucks white hairs* *screams at bald patch* *runs*

Oswann, this is the slickest looking blog I've ever seen. Good work.
Anyway, I always feel like a turtle when it comes to technology. But once I find something new that I like, I won't abandon it, even when something newer and cooler comes out.
